Exodus 3: 13-14  "Then Moses said to God, 'If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?' God said to Moses 'I AM WHO I AM'. And he said, Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you."

God appeared to Moses in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush, and the bush was burning, but was not consumed. God called to Moses out of the bush to tell him that he had been chosen to lead the children of Israel out of Egyptian slavery into a land of promise. Moses feared such a great task, and sought reassurance. God reveals Himself as the I AM, the God of past, present, and future. Jesus refers to this passage in Luke 20:37, 38 to say, "God is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him", in reassurance of the resurrection.
